Bayern - wool, Birkies, camels

In het vorige blog over Beieren vertelde ik al dat ik zo goed geslaagd was in de Beierse wolwinkels. Hooguit weer iets té goed……. 
Het assortiment in de wolwinkels zijn anders dan bij ons. In de Beierse winkels wordt meestal minstens de helft van de ruimte ingenomen door sokkenwol. Hoewel ik wist dat de Duitsers graag sokken breien en ik dus ook wel wat extra sokkenwol verwacht had, was ik verbaasd over deze verdeling. Waar ze van de ’gewone’ knotjes hooguit de gebruikelijke en niet zo spectaculaire merken verkopen, gaan ze met de sokkenwol een stapje verder. Strepende wol doet het nog steeds erg goed. Vaak zijn de strepen erg nadrukkelijk en in vrij felle kleuren. De meer gemêleerde streepjes of kleurverlopen zie je minder vaak. De meeste knotjes zijn van goede kwaliteit, Opal, LanaGrossa Meilenweit, Online, Trekking XXL en Lang. Maar de exclusievere en duurdere garens (bv Colinette Jitterbug of Lorna’s Laces) ben ik er niet tegengekomen. Nieuwigheden als garens met bamboo en Aloë Vera zie je er wel. Bij sommige winkels kan je ook kant en klare sokken kopen. Machinaal gebreid met een jojo-hiel, maar wel mooi gemaakt van goeie wol en maar rond een tientje. In het winkeltje van een soort sociale werkplaats lagen zelfs handgebreide sokken in de etalage.

The assortment in the wool shops is a bit different compared to what you can find in Dutch shops. In the Bayern shops at least half of the space is filled by sock yarn. Although I knew that the German knitters love to knit socks, so I did expect some extra emphasize on sock yarn, but I was surprised by this amount and variety. The yarns for sweaters and such are the regular brands and not quite spectacular, but with the sock yarns they do make an effort to offer a great variety. Striping yarn is popular. Often the stripes are well visible and the colours are bright. The more subtile colour changes you see less often. Most of the yarn is of good quality, Opal, LanaGrossa Meilenweit, Online, Trekking XXL and Lang. But the more exclusive and more expensive yarns (for example Colinette Jitterbug of Lorna’s Laces) I didn’t see at all. Noveltie yarn with bamboo and Aloë Vera you can find too. In some shops you can buy socks ready to wear, but these are not handmade. Made on a machine with a jojo-heel, but well made of good quality wool and only about ten euro. In another shop we saw some hand knitted socks in the window display.
