For her anniversary Vicky is touring through 23 German and Austrian cities.
Last 17th of March Vicky Leandros gave a fantastic anniversary concert in the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf (Germany). A sold out house with 1900 enthusiastic viewers heard Vicky singing her many chansons, ballads and schlagers. The delirious crowd released her just after three hours, a lot of encores and standing ovations.

Vicky’s has had a long career, which started in 1965, when she made her first record ‘Messer, Gabel schere Licht’, produced by her father Leo Leandros. Although her career already last for four decades, Vicky celebrates her 30th anniversary. During the eighties she spent almost ten years with raising her three children.

2006 is for Vicky in many ways a special year. An anniversary, a divorce after a marriage of 19 years and a German preselection for the Eurovision Song contest which she lost. This preselection took place the 9th of last March and Vicky didn’t sound very well that evening. Technical disorders could have been the cause. In the beginning of this concert there were also a few technical problems, which were quickly resolved. Vicky’s, whose voice was great, dealt perfectly with this problem.

During the first part of this concert Vicky highlighted her more serious oeuvre, with chansons, older pop songs and ballads. Most of the songs were sung in French and English and Vicky even sang a song in Japanese. During the sixties she gave a lot of concerts in Japan had a huge hit with a Japanese translation of ‘Sundays not’.
Vicky personally prefers to sing in French and this language suits her voice very well. Most of that also her successful international hits were in French, like ‘L ‘Amour est Blue’ (ESC 1967) and ‘Après Toi’(ESC 1972). Vicky was not only popular in Europe during her career but also in Canada, Japan, Greece and South Africa.
The most beautiful interpretations of the first part of the concert were ‘Ne me quitte pas’ of Jacques Brel and ‘Fire and Rain’, Vicky sang this song in the seventies at a live show for the BBC in the Royal Albert Hal in London and forgot her lines after a very hilarious sketch of two English comics.

Farewell and separation were remarkable themes in the songs during the first part of the concert. Lines from songs like ‘I start again without you’(‘Ich fange ohne Dich neu an’), ‘You don’t hurt anymore’ (‘Fremd in einer grossen Stadt’)’, ‘Why can feelings hurt so much? (‘S.C.H.E.I.D.U.N.G’)’ en ‘Free Again’, seems to connect very well to the developments in Vicky’s private life. The public noticed this and gave her long applauses and flowers to encourage her.

In the second part of the concert Vicky sang her contribution for the preselection of the Eurovision song contest 2006, ‘Don’t break my heart’. This time technique and voice sounded very well and the audience gave her a huge applause.
Than a more cheerful part of the concert began, Vicky sang a lot of German schlagers. This kind of songs made her during the seventies very popular in countries like Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The audience participated very enthusiastic by hits like ‘Ich liebe das Leben’, ‘Tango d’Amor’, ‘Ja, Ja, der Peter ist schlau’. Finally Vicky left the stage and went into the audience singing about Bouzoukis (‘When Bouzoukis played’ 1973). She finished her concert with ‘Theo, wir fahr’n nach Lodz’, ‘O Kaymos’ and a capella ‘Amazing Grace’.

Vicky’s jubileum in Düsseldorf

Voor haar 30 jarige jubileum toert Vicky Leandros momenteel langs 23 Duitse en Oostenrijkse steden. Afgelopen vrijdag 17 maart gaf Vicky Leandros een fantastisch jubileumconcert in de Tonhalle in Düsseldorf. Voor een uitverkocht huis met 1900 bezoekers zong zij haar vele chansons, balladen en schlagers. Pas na ruim drie uur en grote hoeveelheid toegiften en staande ovaties liet het enthousiaste publiek haar gaan.

Vicky’s heeft al een lange carrière achter de rug, deze startte in 1965 toen zij onder leiding van haar vader Leo Leandros haar eerste single “Messer, Gabel schere Licht” opnam.
Toch viert Vicky dit jaar officieel haar 30e en niet 40e jubileum, reden hiervoor is dat zij het ruim 10 jaar, van 85’ tot 95’, vanwege haar gezinsleven rustig aan deed.

2006 is voor Vicky in veel opzichten een bijzonder jaar. Een jubileum, een scheiding na 19 jaar huwelijk en een verloren voorronde ten behoeve van een derde Duitse deelname aan het Eurovisie Songfestival. 9 maart jl. vond deze voorronde plaats en Vicky klonk toen live niet goed. Technische problemen zouden hiervan de oorzaak zijn. Ook in het begin van dit concert was het geluid niet optimaal, nadat de techniek goed was afgesteld verliep alles echter verder vlekkeloos.Vicky, die overigens uitstekend bij stem was, ving dit euvel geroutineerd op.

Tijdens het eerste deel van het concert bracht Vicky met name het serieuzere deel van haar oeuvre, met veel chansons, oudere popsongs en ballades. Opvallend veel liedjes zong zij in het Frans en Engels en Vicky waagde zich zelfs aan het Japans. In de zestiger jaren gaf Vicky veel concerten in Japan en had zij daar een grote hit met de Japanse vertaling van ‘Sonntags nie’.
Dat Vicky zelf het liefst in het Frans zingt, is goed te horen, want deze taal geeft haar stem een extra dimensie. Daarbij waren haar grote internationale hits, zoals ‘Après Toi’ (ESC 1972) en ‘L’Amour est Blue’ (ESC 1967) ook in het Frans gezongen. Buiten Europa was Vicky gedurende haar carrière ook populair in Canada, Japan, Griekenland en Zuid Afrika.
Uitblinkers in het eerste deel van het concert waren met name ‘Ne me quitte pas’ van Jacques Brel, prachtig begeleid door Roland Cabezas op klassiek gitaar en ‘Fire and Rain’, dat Vicky in de jaren ’70 voor een liveshow voor de BBC in de Royal Alberthal te Londen zong, waarbij zij haar tekst vergat omdat zij zo moest lachen om een komische sketch daarvoor van twee Engelse komieken.

Afscheid en scheiding waren twee opvallende thema’s in de liedjes van het eerste deel van het concert. ‘Ich fange ohne Dich neu an’, ’Du, tust nicht mehr Weh (Fremd in einer grossen Stadt)’, ‘Warum tun Gefühlen so weh? (S.C.H.E.I.D.U.N.G)’ en ‘Free Again’, lijken naadloos aan te sluiten op Vicky’s huidige privé-situatie. De extra beladenheid van dit onderwerp voor Vicky ontging het publiek niet. De liedjes werden steeds weer beloond met een groot applaus en bloemen van fans.

In het tweede deel van het concert zong Vicky haar bijdrage aan de voorselectie van het Eurovisie Songfestival 2006, ‘Don’t break my Heart’. Dit keer functioneerde zowel de techniek als haar stem prima, wat werd beloond met een groot applaus.
Daarna kreeg het concert had een beduidend luchtiger karakter, omdat de schlagers aan bod kwamen. In de jaren ’70 is Vicky hierdoor mede groot geworden. Het publiek zong luidkeels mee met haar klassiekers ‘Ich liebe das Leben’, ‘Tango d’Amor’, ‘Ja, Ja, der Peter ist Schlau’. Triomferend toog Vicky zelfs uiteindelijk de zaal in om onder het publiek haar ‘Bouzouki Klang’ ten gehore te brengen. Het concert werd besloten met ‘Theo, wir farh’n nach Lodz’, ‘Ich hab’ die Liebe geseh’n’ en het a capella gezongen ‘Auf Wiederseh’n, Ihr Freunde mein’.
